چکیده

The use of different multivariate meta-analytic approaches to quantitatively combine and aggregate effect sizes from different primary studies can have different important implications for the cumulative research findings and research-based conclusions. Multivariate fixed and mixed effects (multivariate random-effects regression) models are examples for such approaches. Gaining knowledge of the differences between these various approaches help meta-analysts to accurately choose between them based on the statistical and sampling assumptions of the two models. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to compare the multivariate parameter estimates and their standard errors from applying these two multivariate approaches. The comparison findings show that the multivariate fixed-effects model results yielded smaller standard errors for multivariate mean effect sizes and the moderator variables than the multivariate mixed-effects. Also, multivariate fixed-effects yielded much smaller effect (regression coefficient) of the moderator variable.

Fixed and Mixed Effects Models in Meta-Analysis

Fixed and Mixed Effects Models in Meta-Analysis The last three decades the accumulation of quantitative research evidence has led to the development of systematic methods for combining information across samples of related studies. Although a few methods have been described for accumulating research evidence over time, meta-analysis is widely considered as the most appropriate statistical metho...

Incorporating multiple interventions in meta-analysis: an evaluation of the mixed treatment comparison with the adjusted indirect comparison

BACKGROUND Comparing the effectiveness of interventions is now a requirement for regulatory approval in several countries. It also aids in clinical and public health decision-making. However, in the absence of head-to-head randomized trials (RCTs), determining the relative effectiveness of interventions is challenging. Several methodological options are now available. We aimed to determine the ...

Meta-analysis of longitudinal studies.

BACKGROUND Longitudinal studies typically report estimates of the effect of a treatment or exposure at various times during the course of follow-up. Meta-analyses of these studies must account for correlations between effect estimates from the same study. PURPOSE To describe and contrast alternative approaches to handling correlations inherent to longitudinal effect estimates in meta-analyses...

Publication bias in research synthesis: sensitivity analysis using a priori weight functions.

Publication bias, sometimes known as the "file-drawer problem" or "funnel-plot asymmetry," is common in empirical research. The authors review the implications of publication bias for quantitative research synthesis (meta-analysis) and describe existing techniques for detecting and correcting it. A new approach is proposed that is suitable for application to meta-analytic data sets that are too...
